The birdlife around Hughes-Garran seemed to enjoy another respite from all the recent smoke because the Sulphur-crested Cockatoos were out in number and I was even lucky enough to see a Gang-gang Cockatoo nestling. The Gang-gang nestling was particularly interesting as there was a concern among those interested watchers that this season would be a bad nesting season for Gang-gangs because of the drought and fires. With all this activity primarily in one spot I spent most of my morning walk near a single tree. I was enjoying looking at the birds coming and going but by doing so I was able to catch some shots I really liked. I hope you enjoy the photographs below.

Trees were a bit of my focus this Sunday morning as I wondered around Hughes and Garran bu I also had plenty of opportunity to photograph some wonderful birds in the area. I saw Galahs at hollows and I was fortunate enough to see an Australasian Grebe climb on to what I assume was its nest. After the usual birds the bottom part of the post is insect heavy as Hughes is in the middle of cicada season with a large number of Red Eye Cicadas around, bringing a number of birds to our garden as they pluck cicadas from our trees. Continuing the insect theme, later on that Sunday I was around the Australian National University (ANU) for my son, but I had a camera with me just in case I came across anything interesting. Red Hill Nature Reserve was the location for my usual walk although, I went through the Federal Gold Club so I could then follow the path along the southern side of Red Hill, about half way up. I was distracted by the birdlife before I got to where I was going but I was not upset, the birds were too beautiful not to photograph. I enjoyed getting some shots of Laughing Kookaburras, a quintessential Australian bird with its mismatching blue and brown. The fact that the kookaburras were looking at hollows was even more exciting. I also saw a pair of coots mating. Just a wonderful way to start a weekend. I hope you like the photographs below.

I always think Parsley Bay Reserve is one of those under-appreciated places. It has a family friendly beach with a shallow sandy bottom that extends far out into the bay. It also has interesting animals running around it. When I used to scuba dive I always looked forward to diving in Parsley Bay as I would always see something interesting. As a child I loved walking thought the bush at the back of the reserve. I recall one night coming down to collect tadpoles in a pond, high up toward the back of the reserve, when a largish eel made an appearance, possibly attracted by my net disturbing the water like a struggling morsel of food. The place has always held a fondness for me, so I was really happy to wander around the park with my camera on Boxing Day 2018. Although I was happy to photograph a currawong at its nest and to see a cormorant, I was even more excited to photograph a water dragon and some crabs, two animals I had been hoping to photograph that day. Canberra suffered a veritable heatwave this week with several days over 40º Celsius and some relief coming this Saturday in the morning, although the temperature was still in the mid-30s later in the day. Walking around Red Hill Nature Reserve Saturday morning seemed strangely quiet, with what felt like fewer birds than normal. The morning was very overcast so most photos below have a white, cloudy sky as a background. Still, it is always nice to get out for a walk on Red Hill, and I still saw some great sights, as well as enjoying the natural environment. I was really happy to be able to get some photographs to confirm two more Gang-gang nestlings on Red Hill and I also enjoyed my brief time watching a group of Grey Fantails. I was able to get back out for a walk around Red Hill Nature Reserve, equipped with the knowledge JackyF had passed on about bird nesting sites. It was a lovely day for a walk on Red Hill with the birds being very cooperative, especially the wonderful Leaden Flycatchers. I also had a repeat sighting of Gang-gangs at a possible nesting hollow. The never-tiring JackyF emailed to ask if I wanted to go for a walk one afternoon to look at a number of nests she knew of around Red Hill Nature Reserve so I could help keep an eye on them and take some photos as well. I jumped at the chance to see this important part of bird behaviour so we agreed to meet on the afternoon of Thursday, 27 December 2018. JackyF really knows Red Hill well and, as always, had some great things to show me. The Leaden Flycatcher was a standout. We also discovered the nest of a wonderfully coloured Red-browed Finch, who was building it very near a path. I hope you enjoy the photographs.

I am no twitcher but I thought why not have a blog post to mark the 100th species of bird I have photographed. However, before I go any further let me make a confession, this may not actually be the 100th species of bird I have photographed since taking up this hobby eight months ago in April 2018. I am using an electronic bird note keeping program called Bird Journal. It is a fantastic program that is cross-platform as well as cross referencing my sightings by species and location. I currently have 99 species listed so when I enter this kite it will be 100. My confession is this sighting is not chronologically correct, as it is after my few days in Sydney over Christmas where I know I photographed some new species, most of which were introduced species. I felt I did not want my 100th bird to be a non-native, some weird orno-natoinalism perhaps??? Well, since this is my hobby, when I came across this bird unexpectedly during my visit to the Woolshed Creek Fossil Site on Thursday, 27 December 2018, blogpost to follow, I figured this was going to be my 100th species. So I can officially say this is the 100th species of bird I have listed as having photographed, or for short, the 100th species of bird I have photographed.

This is a bit of a different post as I wanted to write about a course I undertook through The Australian National University’s Centre for Continuing Education. The course had a simple title that summed it up well, it was called Understanding Birds. The lecturing occurred over six nights from late November and there were also two field trips on Saturday mornings. The first field trip went to Campbell, Molonglo Gorge and Jerrabomberra Wetlands while the second one was conducted at Mulligans Flat Woodland Reserve. The second field trip will be described in more detail later in the post, with accompanying bird photographs.

Usually I walk around Red Hill Nature Reserve early on a Saturday morning but as I was out on Saturday with an ANU Continuing Education course I was attending, I visited Red Hill on Sunday morning instead. (I will write more about the course very shortly, especially our field trip to Mulligans Flat.) I varied my route ever so slightly this morning, as I try to do regularly, which allowed me to see a few more birds than I would have seen on my usual path. Red Hill is such a treasure so close to where I live, it is always worth going for a walk. I hope you enjoy these photographs.

My motivation for getting out of bed before the sun rises on a Saturday morning is the knowledge that I will be shortly walking around Red Hill Nature Reserve photographing something interesting. I never try to anticipate what I will see on the hill that day, I just know I will see something. On this morning, I was so glad to see Rainbow Lorikeets. As I said in a previous post, I really have a soft spot for these engaging parrots as they were always around when I was growing up in Sydney. They still maintain their mischievous ways. Despite all the marvellous birdlife I saw, this was the first morning in a long time I did not come back with a single Gang-gang photograph. I certainly heard the birds and saw one fly past, I just did not see any of these wonderful birds in a tree. Towards the end of my walk I found a placid, cooperative Australian Magpie who went about its business, mostly, unconcerned about my photographic activity. I also photographed three different species of insects, all with my telephoto lens. I hope you enjoy the pictures below.

I visited a different part of Red Hill Nature Reserve than I usually visit on my morning walks. I am glad I did as there was a different variety of birds in this location. I had an extended view of a pair of Gang-gang Cockatoos as well as a fleeting look at a Fan-tailed Cuckoo. I spent a fair bit of time staying in a single spot photographing the birds around me, it was a lovely start to a Sunday.
